Nairobi

Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The word Nairobi is derived from the Masai phrase ''Enkare Nyirobi'', which means the ''the place of cool waters''. The city lies along the banks of the River Nairobi, and is also popularly known as the ''Green City in the Sun''. Founded as a simple rail depot at the end of the 19th century, the city has grown to be one of the largest cities on the continent. But unlike most cities that grew in the 20th century, it is surrounded by the hundreds of square kilometres of plains, forests, and cliffs that make up Nairobi National Park. The city is also known as the Safari Capital of Africa, providing easy access to some of the best national parks on the continent. So, take a safari and check out all manner of wildlife, visit the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage (also keeps Rhinos), observe the tall gangly creatures at the Giraffe Centre, and educate yourself at the Nairobi National Museum, National Railway Museum, and Bomas of Kenya. Also visit Uhuru Gardens, which was built in remembrance of the struggle for independence. You can also white-water raft on the Tana River, an hour away. The city, a blend of world-cultures, also has many restaurants, bars, and entertainment centres, filled with hundreds of cuisines and activities.
